Planning Ahead: Valentines Day
February 4, 2010
Here are some ideas to plan a fun day for celebrating the holiday of the heart.
Do something totally different this year; a unit study of the human heart:
Purchase a beef heart at your local butcher. You can discuss the chambers of the heart, and the blood vessels. Compare this heart to a human heart diagram or model. Talk about the differences and likenesses.

The following is one of my favorite posts from February 2009

The fruit of the Spirit is love. This is the first quality of the Spirit divinely inspired by God. You will find two kinds of love in scripture. Philos love which is a friendly love or the love one has toward a friend or companion. Agape love which is a caring love, the first quality of the Spirit. Agape is a divine capacity to love. Only God is capable of perfect Agape but we should strive to love as He loves us. Agape is patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, and it is not proud. 1Corinthians 13:4-8
Agape seeks the highest and best for another. It is not self seeking, thus the ability to be slow to anger. Psalm 145:8. Agape keeps no record of wrongs and does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Praise God for His Agape upon us!
If you want to learn more about Agape love and other qualities of the Spirit, I recommend taking Beth Moore’s study Living Beyond Yourself, Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit.
Happy almost Valentines Day!
Here are some bible verses in the romantic King James version to help you celebrate this holiday of love:
Fill your heart with Gods word
Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness. Romans 10:10
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. Mark 12:30
Search me, oh God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts. Psalm 139:23
Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Psalm 37:4
Verses that speak of God’s Love
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee. Jeremiah 31:3
God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Behold, what manner of love the father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. 1 John 3:1
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10
We love Him, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
Family Fitness
January 1, 2010

The start of a new year always brings new beginnings and new habits. Now that I have shared about getting spiritually fit in my last post I thought we could take a little look into our physical well being in the homeschool. I am not talking about diets but rather keeping our bodies moving and in shape. This is important for the whole family. Keeping kids active is important for their minds and ours too.
Speaking of family fitness and staying healthy, a friend, homeschooling mom of 4 and reader of 100 Digits has entered the Spirit 40 Day Health and Fitness Challenge. Would you support a fellow homeschool mom in her efforts of being healthy and fit and VOTE FOR Katie Jones between January 2nd and January 8th? She would love to be part of the final 4 in this challenge. You can also show your support by becoming a fan and rooting for her on her Facebook page. Good luck Katie!
Here are some resources that I have come across to look into for keeping active with your family:

Perfect Play Dough
September 6, 2009

3 cups flour
1.5 cups salt
6 tsp cream of tarter
Combine above ingredients in a lage saucepan.
Gradually stir in:
3 tbsp oil
3 cups water
1 tsp. food coloring
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Remove from heat and knead until smooth. This makes one small batch. I usually quadruple it!
- Store in ziplock bag (squeeze out all the air). and it will last for many months!
- You could also add scents to it. Try these extracts for yummy smells; peppermint, almond or vanilla. About a teaspoon per batch.
- After the dough is cool enough let them start playing with it. Warm play dough is so wonderful.
- Don’t give them play dough tools right away. Let them just explore and make shapes on their own for awhile and then pull out some fun cutters or rolling pin. This will make the activity last much longer.
- You don’t have to buy expensive Play Doh brand equipment. Forks, spoons, cookie cutters and even unsharpened pencils work great!

Find the Books of the Bible
February 17, 2009

In this paragraph, the names of 25 books of the Bible are hidden. The names often stretch across multiple words or even lines. If you want the answer key you can leave a comment and let me know how many you found. Have fun! Here it is:
This is a most remarkable puzzle. Someone
found it in the seat pocket on a flight from Los
Angeles to Honolulu, keeping himself occupied
for hours. One man from Illinois worked on it
while fishing from his john boat. Roy Clark
studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Victs
mentioned it in her column once. One woman
judges the job to be so involving that she brews
a cup of tea to calm her nerves. There will be
some names that are really easy to spot… that’s
a fact. Some people will soon find themselves
in a jam, especially since the book names are
not necessarily capitalized. The truth is,
from answers we get, we are forced to admit it
usually takes a minister or a scholar to see
some of them at the worst. Something in our
genes is responsible for the difficulty we have.
Those able to find all of them will hear great
lamentations from those who have to be shown.
One revelation may help. Books like Timothy
and Samuel may occur without their numbers.
And punctuation or spaces in the middle are
normal. A chipper attitude will help you
compete. Remember, there are 25 books of
the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph.
(Only 25 of these are in the puzzle)

A New Twist on an Old Game
February 8, 2009

Have you heard of the game Bananagrams? Well, if you don’t own it but have Scrabble in your game closet you can play it right now.
“Bananagrams has been compared to Scrabble without the board. In fact, some people use Scrabble tiles in lieu of purchasing Bananagrams. Because Bananagrams can be played by people at any reading level, the game is even good for children starting to learn how to spell, and has been touted as both educational as well as popular among consumers. An independent psychologist reviewed Bananagrams and expressed her recommendation of Bananagrams as a positive example of creativity stimulation because, perhaps unlike Scrabble, the goal is to play all of the tiles, which generates a need to configure and reconfigure one’s word grid to accept all of the letters.”
Here are the directions for play:
Rules for Banagrams
- Place all 144 tiles face down on center of table. These tiles are referred to as the “BUNCH”. For games of 2-4 people, each player takes 21 letters from the bunch, keeping them face down. For 5-6 players, 15 letters are taken. For 7-8 (or more) players, 11 letters are taken.
NOW THE GAME BEGINS!!! - Any one player says “SPLIT” whereupon all players turn their own tiles face up and proceed to form their OWN collection of connecting and intersecting words. The words may be horizontal or vertical, reading left to right or top to bottom. Each player may rearrange his/her own words as often as desired. Players DO NOT take turns, but play independently of each other and at the same time.
- When a player has none of his/her original letters left, that player says “PEEL” and takes a tile from the bunch. At this point ALL OF THE OTHER PLAYERS MUST ALSO TAKE A TILE FROM THE BUNCH and add it to their collection of letters.
- At any time, and as often as desired during play, any player may return a difficult-to-use letter back to the center of the BUNCH, face down, but MUST TAKE THREE LETTERS IN RETURN. The player must declare this action to the other players by saying “DUMP”. This exchange does not affect the other players.
- Play continues until there are fewer tiles in the BUNCH than there are players. The first player with no remaining letters shouts “BANANAS” and is the winner of that hand. The other players may now inspect the winning hand for misspelled or incorrect words. Proper nouns are not acceptable. Any available dictionary may be used. If all words are acceptable, that player is the WINNER OF THAT HAND. If any word in the “winning” hand is found to be unacceptable, that player becomes the “Rotten Banana” and is OUT OF THAT HAND, and must return his/her letters, face down to the center bunch and the game now resumes for the remaining players.
Get more information and tips at the Bananagrams website. By the way, there is a button below every post that says “print this post”. If you click on it, it will give you a page with just the post and not all of the static blog graphics. This way you can print out these game directions without a lot of ink! Have fun!
Coloring Flags and More
January 20, 2009

Crayola has a great site for coloring and craft resources. Their coloring pages are not just for coloring, they are educational resources too. I searched for flags and it came up with all of the state flags as well as many foreign countries. Each containing facts about the state or country.
I thought this was a good tutorial on making mini books too.
